ALL STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE THE TEXTBOOK FOR THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS.

FAQ’s…
Does this class meet on campus?
NO.  This class DOES NOT require you to meet on campus, however, you will be required to facilitate some of your own learning projects, ie; the Interview Assignment

Does the class require me to log in at a certain time?
No.  You log in to work at your convenience as long as you meet the weekly due date.

When are things due?
I believe that the most significant advantage of taking an online class, is that students can manage their own learning, therefore- things are due once a week:  Sundays at midnight.  However, my most successful students turn in work throughout the week.

Will I need the book?
YES.  And you will need it day 1!  The textbook information is provided on the “Textbook” tab and is available year-round on our campus bookstore link, so there is no excuse not to have the book. I will NOT offer extensions due to lack of a book.  You can purchase an online version of the text  from the publisher.   I have also placed 3 copies on reserve in our library that you can check out for 2 hours at a time.

I’m afraid of public speaking so I thought this class would be a good option
It isn’t.
This isn’t really a public speaking class.  While we will do some public speaking, its mostly a business theory class that looks at how people communicate in a work environment.  Plus… learning public speaking is really best done in a face to face environment where you can really see all the nonverbal communication that is a part of it.

How much work does it involve?
You will have at MINIMUM… a quiz, a homework assignment  or group activity,  and a discussion for every chapter. This class is designed to meet all the same course objectives as a face-to-face class… therefore, you should expect to spend the same amount of time as you would in a campus-based, full semester class- which is generally: 3 hours per week course time and a few hours for homework per week-about 80 hours of work for a traditional 16 week course.  Divide that number by the number of weeks for the course you’re taking and you can get a reasonable idea of how much work is required.  Translate this to an online environment -you should expect to be logging in daily during the week; doing several hours of homework a night. For an acclerated course (the 3, 5 or 8 week classes) you should expect to log in more than once a day.

How do we do speeches? Speeches will be video taped by you and uploaded to YouTube.  The post will be private.  A guide will be provided.

How “tech-savvy” do I have to be?
Fairly. You will need to learn the ins and outs of:

  • D2L
  • PowerPoint
  • Word
  • filming & uploading video

You need to be very comfortable navigating the internet, have used a video camera, proficient with email, etc…  You should spend some time learning how your video camera works.

I haven’t taken an online class before… will I be able to do this?
Of course you can!  Your success in the class ultimately depends on the kind of student you are: Do you like technology?  Do you work ahead of deadlines?  Are you an independent learner?  How motivated are you?  How do you respond to obstacles? I would recommend that you take some time to look at the college’s guides for success in online learning:  http://www.lonestar.edu/lsc-online-get-started.htm This provides a pretty good Readiness Assessment and practical advice for succeeding in an online course.

Students are required to complete an online orientation by the Lone Star College system before they gain access to their first online class.  You can get started here: http://www.lonestar.edu/lsc-online/13815.htm

Do I really have to have 3 legal age audience members for every speech?
YES.

Any other major projects in class?
Yes.  The interview project.  You will have to participate in a mock interview and write about the experience.  You will be allowed to set up the interview at your convenience as long as your “interviewer” is not a relative and is willing to complete the electronic review that is to be emailed to me from their work address.

What’s different about the shortened class?
The pace!  I offer different sections of 1321:  the full semester, 16 week version, 8 week and a 3 week class.  The shortened classes must still cover the same material in a fraction of the time, so… they move much FASTER!  Expect to be online constantly and turning in things daily in this class.
The CONCEPTS aren’t difficult to grasp, the sheer VOLUME of work is the challenge.

Characteristics of Online Students (from LSCS Online):

  • self-motivated, self-directed, self-paced
  • excellent time management
  • able to complete work at non-traditional times
  • enjoy communicating via technology
  • moderately techno-savvy
  • learn visually through reading
  • able to focus at home to reduce commute
  • convenient and reliable access to the internet

I hope this gives you a better idea of what the class is like and your potential for success… if you need more information, feel free to email me.
