FAQ’s…
Does this class meet on campus?
NO.  This class DOES NOT require you to meet on campus.

Does the class require me to log in at a certain time?
No.  You log in to work at your convenience.

When are things due?
I believe that the most significant advantage of taking an online class, is that students can manage their own learning, therefore- things are due once a week:  Turn in dates for this class are Sundays at 11:55 pm.  However, my most successful students turn in work throughout the week.

How much work does it involve?
You will have at MINIMUM… a quiz, a homework assignment, group activity or journal,  and a discussion for every chapter. This class is designed to meet all the same course objectives as a face-to-face class… therefore, you should expect to spend the same amount of time as you would in a campus-based, full semester class- which is generally: 3 hours per week course time and a few hours for homework per week- so… about 80 hours of work for a traditional 16 week course.  Divide that number by the number of weeks for the course you’re taking and you can get a reasonable idea of how much work is required.  Translate this to an online environment -you should expect to be logging in daily during the week; doing several hours of homework a night. For an acclerated course (the 3, 5 or 8 week classes) you should expect to log in more than once a day.

How “tech-savvy” do I have to be?
Fairly.  You will need to learn the ins and outs of:

  • Angel
  • Word
  • Internet/ YouTube

I haven’t taken an online class before… will I be able to do this?
Whether or not you will be able to succeed in this class really depends on the kind of student you are: Do you like technology?  Do you work ahead of deadlines?  Are you an independent learner?  How motivated are you?  How do you respond to obstacles? I would recommend that you take some time to look at the college’s guides for success in online learning:  http://www.lonestar.edu/lsc-online-get-started.htm   This provides a pretty good Readiness Assessment and practical advice for succeeding in an online course.

There is a student tutorial for Angel.  It is available at:   http://help.angellearning.com/740/docs/sref/default.htm?referer=http%3A%2F%2Fmyonline%2Elonestar%2Eedu%2F    I highly recommend you go through it.  Angel is the NEW Learning Management System through which online classes are now offered as of Summer 2010- *It isn’t likely to be smooth and “bug-free.”  You need to know going in- that there may be issues.  Know that for my part, I will be dilligent in my efforts to solve issues as quickly as I can.  The most important skill to have is perseverance!  When you hit an obstacle, find help, don’t just quit.  Use the online chat tools and the toll free assistance number:  866-614-5014 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              866-614-5014      end_of_the_skype_highlighting.

What’s different about the shortened class?
The pace!  I offer different sections of 1318:  the full semester, 16 week version, 8 week and a 5 week class.  The shortened classes must still cover the same material in a fraction of the time, so… they move much FASTER!  Expect to be online constantly and turning in things daily in this class.  The CONCEPTS aren’t difficult to grasp, the sheer VOLUME of work will be the challenge.

Characteristics of Online Students (from LSCS Online):

  • self-motivated, self-directed, self-paced
  • excellent time management
  • able to complete work at non-traditional times
  • enjoy communicating via technology
  • moderately techno-savvy
  • learn visually through reading
  • able to focus at home to reduce commute
  • convenient and reliable access to the internet
