Lone Star College-Kingwood
Spanish Distance Learning
Intermediate Spanish II
SUMMER 2012
Prof.Baralt

This Distance Learning Spanish Course is designed  for very disciplined, self-motivated and organized students who are willing to take responsibility for their own learning. The course is designed to motivate the student to acquire, in progressive stages, intermediated communicative proficiency – oral, aural, reading and writing skills-as well as cultural awareness. It emphasizes intermediate to advanced level written, oral and aural practice and includes: intermediate to advanced principles of grammar *, using those grammar principles to expand writing skills, reading culturally-oriented material, listening comprehension and interactive exercises based on online activities.
* Students in this class must have prior knowledge of basic rules of Spanish language, especially: proper verb conjugation (present tense, preterit and imperfect, specially the irregular verb conjugation); placing proper diacritical accents in Spanish words and correct spelling ( words without accent mark are considered wrong in Spanish language!)

SOFTWARE PIRACY
Law strictly prohibits unauthorized copying of software purchased by LSCS for use in laboratories. Administration will take appropriate disciplinary action against anyone violating copyright laws.

COMPUTER VIRUS PROTECTION
Computer viruses are, unfortunately, a fact of life. Using storage media on more than one computer creates the possibility of infecting computers and diskettes with a computer virus. This exposes the computers of the campus, your personal computer, and any others you may be using to potentially damaging viruses. The campus has aggressive anti-virus procedures in place to protect its computers, but cannot guarantee that a virus might not temporarily infect one of its machines. It is your responsibility to protect all computers under your control and use and ensure that each storage devices you use, whenever or wherever you use it, has been scanned with anti – virus software. Since new viruses arise continually, your anti – virus software must be kept current. And, since no anti – virus software will find every virus, keeping copies of data (backups) is extremely important.

ATTENDANCE
This course requires discipline in the learning process. It is not an independent study. There are specific dates when assignments are due and these must be strictly followed. A student who is absent for two consecutive weeks MAY be dropped from the course. A student is considered absent if he/she has not entered the course at all during that time and has not communicated with the instructor or submitted any work during said time.
Regular attendance is essential for the development of language skills. Even though this is an online class, you are required to check your online course (e-mail, discussion board, your assignment tools, etc) at least every other day. Spanish will be reinforced since first day of class. You must always have an online Spanish dictionary link open as you work on your assignments. At no time should you use online translation. If there is a case a student is using online translation, his/her grade for such assignment will be a zero.
It is your responsibility to obtain any missed information. In case of an ongoing problem (such as long business trip, personal crisis or illness that will require time away from class), the student should withdraw from this course and take it when circumstances allow fulfillment of the requirements.

LATE ASSIGNMENT
All assignments turned in on the deadline will be evaluated and graded! If you miss any assignment you must contact your Instructor in less than 24hrs of the deadline. There is a penalty of 20 points per day if your work is turned in later. Students cannot access a quiz or test once the deadline is past. If you do not turn in an assignment on time you will receive a zero. I reserve the right to make exceptions (it must be a valid excuse) to this based on circumstances if I deem appropriate.
Assignments will be due on Mondays at 11:00 pm. ( For instructional reasons Instructor may change a deadline if necessary. It’s crucial that students check the course calendar constantly to be aware of any modification of schedule).

ASSIGNMENTS
All students are expected to be familiar with Microsoft Word & Power Point to type, save and edit their work. If you have a Mac computer you may submit your work using Pages or Keynote.
All student must have access to a working computer with reliable internet connection. If a student doesn’t have a computer and/or internet access at home, he/she must make arrangements to come to Campus and use College computers.
All students are expected to use e-mail and know e-mail etiquette to communicate with their Instructor and classmates, in English and Spanish.
If during the semester a new computer tool or program is introduced (and requested) by the Instructor, students should be willing to learn the tool and/or program.

MAKE-UPS
Every assignment in this course must be taken on the date indicated in the course schedule. Please review the late assignment policy above for assignments turned in later.

NOTE: If you have a disability that may require some modification of testing or other class requirements, please contact the instructor within the first week of class so that appropriate arrangements can be made. If you have a disability and are NOT registered with Disability Services, the instructor is not obligated to make accommodations. For more information or to apply for services contact the Lone Star College-Kingwood.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, the meaning of plagiarism is “to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own: use (another’s production) without crediting the source.”
I expect my students to work on his/her assignments independently. Do not get help from roommate, neighbors, and friends. Honesty and integrity must be reciprocal. The same way I care about you & your learning, I expect you to care about my efforts and the time I spend preparing carefully each assignment. Be honest with yourself and work for the grade you aim for.
If you need detailed information on Academic Integrity, please consult the Lone Star District Catalogue. In my course, plagiarism will not be tolerated, and will result in a zero (or a “F” grade) for the particular assignment. Online translation is not allowed, and will result in a zero for the specific assignment.

COURSE WITHDRAWAL
If the student chooses to drop the course, it is the student’s responsibility to do the required paperwork. If the student does not follow the steps required, he/she remains on the roll sheet and will receive “F” at the end of the semester. Please pay attention to the prescribed last date to drop without penalty as indicated on the Schedule of Assignments provided by the Instructor. Check the Lone Star District Catalogue for information on the last day to drop and receive “W” for the this course.

GRADES
All grades will be posted online. Some assignments take longer to be corrected, so expect a few days after your assignment is completed to have your grade posted. Final grade will be posted online.
