naturewriting-2014-dms

(I will continue to add information about this course.)

This course is a survey of writers’ responses to the natural world.  We’ll consider the works of authors such as Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, Standing Bear, Hopkins, Steinbeck, Muir, Abbey, Leopold, Carson, Mowat, Abbey, Berry, McPhee, Momaday, Chatwin, Dillard, Lopez, Quammen, Silko, Kincaid, Erdrich, Kingsolver, Pollan, Williams, Bass, McKibben, and Ray.

In discussions and writings, we will

  • Compare writing about nature by authors from diverse backgrounds.
  • Analyze changes to nature writing.
  • Apply nature-writing themes to the campus’ habitat.  LSC-Tomball has a wetlands trail and pier, bluebird houses, a purple martin house, a chimney swift tower, a pollinator garden, and native plant gardens, and we continue to work to attract diverse wildlife to the campus.  During some classes we will go outdoors and apply observations from our readings to the campus habitats.  Also, there will be honors-by-contract, citizen-scientist, and service-learning opportunities available involving the campus wildlife and habitat.

ENGL 1301 is a prerequisite for this course, and the course meets the multicultural requirement for LSCS degree.
