This summer, Blake spent a week in Brooklyn, New York, as a participant in Along the Shore: Changing and Preserving the Landmarks of Brooklyn’s Industrial Waterfront. The workshop was sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, and participants in the program all earned competitive monetary awards covering the cost of the program.
Program topics included: the legacy of New York’s oil and chemical industries, the preservation of Brooklyn’s Navy Yard, the cultural history of the Brooklyn Bridge, anti-slavery activism at Plymouth Church, and the rise and fall of Coney Island. As part of the program, Blake will be preparing a digital journal that he hopes to share with faculty and students at Lone Star College-CyFair, particularly those interested in urban history and historic preservation issues. Upon returning from Brooklyn, he will make a presentation on his experiences as part of the college’s speaker series on NEH workshops.
