BEST START is Lone Star College’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), an important required component to our college system’s SACS accreditation process. Targeting first-time-in-college (FTIC) students, there are four components of our Best Start program:

1.     Set a goal

2.     Make a plan

3.     Get connected

4.     Stay involved

Students in the BEST START program will participate in identifying and addressing barriers to success, explore careers, participate in enrollment planning activities, and confirm their majors. Intrusive advising is a major component incorporated in the course to better assist students with guidance throughout the semester.

 All advisors, faculty, staff, and our more experienced students can participate in helping our new students to accomplish the BEST START activities. Leaders at each college can encourage individuals and departments to get involved, based on local student needs.

HUMD 0330 is our student success course, currently designed for our FTIC students who test into two or more developmental courses. These students are required to take the HUMD 0330 course, which is designed to enrich their First Year College Experience.  It will eventually be required for all FTIC students.

HUMD Advisors are assigned to each of our HUMD class sections. They provide additional support and campus resource information to the students. In addition, they make three class visits throughout the semester and provide one-on-one advising session to complete the individualized academic plans with students.

EDUC 1300 is our transferable student success course. Any qualified student is eligible to take this course and receive all the same Best Start program curriculum as HUMD 0330 students. It was designed for students that wanted to enhance their First Year College Experience and get on a path to academic and personal success.
