Trustees Start Process to Change Name of College District

Article Body
Officials at the Lone Star College System have begun a process to review and possibly change the name of the 35-year-old college district. A name change and new “brand identity” makes good sense, says Chancellor Dr. Richard Carpenter. “Research has been telling us for years that our name is cumbersome, and does not communicate the fact that our district is composed of five colleges and seven learning centers,” Dr. Carpenter said. “Many of our residents still do not realize that the community college near them is part of a much larger system of colleges with almost 50,000 students this fall.  “I’m still very new and have an outsider’s perspective on many things. I believe the district will benefit from a stronger, clearer name and identity.” The name review process announced Thursday allows all citizens to recommend a new name for the district. These suggestions will be collected, researched, and narrowed to a short list of semi-finalists. The community will also have opportunity to review the compiled list of recommended names, and help narrow the list further. Depending on input and research, trustees are hopeful to select a new name sometime in November. “There are many positive benefits that will result from a new name,” Dr. Carpenter said. “A new name will link the five colleges into a single identity while preserving local identities, improve understanding of each college’s relationship to the system, improve understanding of the district’s total ‘capacities’, and improve the district’s ability to attract students, partners, and resources.” Moving quickly, he said, will allow the district to establish a new name in time for the summer recruitment season. Dr. Carpenter announced a web site for additional information about the name review process: www.lonestar.edu/newbrand. Lone Star College System comprises Lone Star College–CyFair, Lone Star College-Kingwood, Lone Star College–Montgomery, Lone Star College-North Harris, Lone Star College–Tomball, seven satellite centers and The University Center.
