What is Leadership North Houston?

Leadership North Houston has been bringing together established leaders like you from industry, commerce, local and state government, education, and non-profit organizations looking for the next level of leadership development and civic engagement for nearly 30 years. The program builds skills and supports the development of a diverse cohort of professional peers through a series of presentations, site visits, workshops, and local projects. Participants exchange ideas, experiences, and best practices as part of the learning process. The curriculum also includes a leadership skills enhancement component designed to strengthen your personal and professional leadership skills contributing to the success of your organization.

Leadership North Houston (LNH) was formed in 1995 when several area Chambers of Commerce and the college system partnered together to meet the need for a leadership program in the north Houston area. The original founding members were:

  • Acres Home Chamber for Business and Economic Development, Inc.
  • Greater East Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce
  • Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce
  • Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce
  • Houston Intercontinental Chamber of Commerce
  • Houston NW Chamber of Commerce
  • Partnership Lake Houston 
  • North Houston Association

Who Should Attend?

You will find Leadership North Houston to be the most valuable experience if you:

  • work in local government or education
  • manage a non-profit organization or serve as a non-profit board member
  • serve in a chamber of commerce or economic development role
  • lead in a business organization or are an entrepreneur

Program Goals

By the end of the program year, you will have:

  • developed an increased knowledge of yourself and your leadership style to better serve your current organization and community
  • developed lasting relationships across all sectors and demographic groups
  • become engaged to help make a difference in the community and to instill that desire in future leaders
  • gained perspective to better understand and take responsibility for the broader community and be able to provide new opportunities for your organization to tackle local issues
  • interacted with decision makers and experts in the field to explore best practices and identify educational and workforce gaps and opportunities for improvement
  • developed a network of connected and empowered leaders across all sectors increasing your influence and ability to impact the greater good

Sessions

The program begins on September 5 with an Orientation followed by a two-day-long Opening Retreat later in September. Day-long sessions are held monthly from October through May covering topics such as education, cultural arts, economic development, health and human services and more. Participants in the program should achieve the following:

  • Learn more about the key issues facing the community
  • Develop relationships with other influential leaders in the Houston area
  • Make a difference in the future of his/her community
  • Emerge as a leader rather than a follower
  • Develop an increased knowledge of leadership styles to better serve his/her current organizations and communities

Curriculum

The program curriculum also includes a leadership skills enhancement component which is designed to strengthen a participant's foundation as a leader to achieve personal goals and contribute to the success of their organization. Participants are encouraged to exchange ideas, experiences and best practices as part of the learning process. The program emphasizes growth in the following key elements of leadership:

  • Personal Accountability
  • Influencing Others
  • Goal Achievement

The selection process allows for 30 participants to be chosen from the emerging and existing leaders who apply for the program. Following completion of Leadership North Houston, program graduates are encouraged to join the Leadership North Houston Alumni Association.

The total investment for the entire ten-month program is $1,500, which can be paid by the individual and/or their employer. This fee covers all program expenses including materials, meals and any special travel that may be required. Some scholarships are available.
